about

dancing wayang is a new record label operating out of a london-based recording studio and aims to provide artists with free studio time and access to a high quality recording facility and equipment. i started the label as a way to combine my job as assistant engineer at eastcote studios with the often experimental and largely non-commercial music i personally love. the idea is to release the sessions recorded here at eastcote in small, hand-packaged vinyl editions. eastcote is an independently run studio in west london which first started in 1980. studio 1, where most of the dancing wayang sessions will take place, has a 1971 mci mixing console and can make use of both digital and analogue recording methods. there's a great selection of microphones (especially ribbon mics), a grand piano, loads of vintage and modern synthesisers and other instruments for the artists' use. for some more specs and additional photos visit the studio's webpage.

below are a few shots of the studio gear and equipment. click on the thumbnail to view a larger version of each photo.

wayang, by the way, means 'puppet' in indonesian. puppets have a long tradition in javanese and balinese theatre, initially spreading hinduist religious beliefs. when islam arrived, it became forbidden to depict god in human form so the traditional puppet plays changed into shadow puppet plays. the wayang kulit are the shadow puppets, which inspired our name and logo.
